Storms and thunderstorms of 29.06.2024: €24.50 million of damage compensated by insurers

Two weeks after the devastating storms and thunderstorms that hit Luxembourg on Saturday June 29, 2024, Luxembourg’s insurers are drawing up an initial assessment of the damage and reaffirming their essential role in crisis management and community protection.

Considerable damage

Since the night of the storm, insurers have been called in to deal with more than 3,750 claims for storm and flood damage to homes and businesses. Total compensation for this damage is currently estimated at 22.50 million euros.

2/3 of damage was caused by flooding following storms, 1/3 by storms.

In addition, 374 vehicles were damaged, some of them permanently out of service, representing an additional cost of 2 million euros.

So far, the total cost of compensated damage amounts to 24.50 million euros.

Exemplary responsiveness and support

Faced with the urgency of the situation, Luxembourg insurers immediately mobilized their resources to provide swift and effective assistance to those affected. Météo Lux’s services worked very well, and the population was able to be warned and take the necessary safety measures.

An important recommendation for the future

In view of the significant increase in extreme weather events in Luxembourg over the last five years, a trend which clearly illustrates the effects of climate change, ACA urges policyholders to review the cover they have taken out. It is crucial to regularly check the cover taken out and adapt it if necessary, by consulting their insurer or insurance agent, to ensure adequate protection against these new risks.
